ABSTRACT

Background. Since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic, Chad has had 7,417 confirmed cases and 193 deaths, one of the lowest in Africa. Objective. This study assessed SARS-CoV-2 immunity in N'Djamena. Methods. In August-October 2021, eleven N'Djamena hospitals collected outpatient data and samples. IgG antibodies against SARSCoV- 2 nucleocapsid protein were identified using ELISA. "Bambino Gesu" Laboratory, Rome, Italy, performed external quality control with chemiluminescence assay. Results. 25-34-year-old (35.2%) made up the largest age group at 31.9 12.6 years. 56.4% were women, 1.3 women/men. The 7th district had 22.5% and the 1st 22.3%. Housewives and students dominated. Overall seroprevalence was 69.5% (95% CI: 67.7-71.3), females 68.2% (65.8-70.5) and males 71.2% (68.6-73.8). >44-year-old had 73.9% seroprevalence. Under-15s were 57.4% positive. Housewives (70.9%), civil servants (71.5%), and health workers (9.7%) had the highest antibody positivity. N'Djamena's 9th district had 73.1% optimism and the 3rd district had 52.5%. Seroprevalences were highest at Good Samaritan Hospital (75.4%) and National General Referral Hospital (74.7%). Conclusion. Our findings indicate a high circulation of SARS-CoV- 2 in N'Djamena, despite low mortality and morbidity after the first two COVID-19 pandemic waves. This high seroprevalence must be considered in Chad's vaccine policy.

ABSTRACT

The COVID-19 pandemic has increased the incidence of serious social mental health problems such as depression. Changes to the way we work, such as telework, are potential factors for mental health problems. This study's aim was to investigate the relationship between difficulties adjusting to new work styles and depression among job workers during the first wave of the COVID-19 pandemic. We conducted a web-questionnaire survey of 919 Japanese workers (May 2020) using the snowball sampling method. A hierarchical logistic regression analysis using a dependent variable (depression), an independent variable (difficulty in work practices), and adjustment variables (gender, age, working practices, and coping) found that those who had difficulty "communicating with boss, colleagues, and subordinates" and "switching on and off" were more likely to be depressed. This study shows that there was a relationship between difficulty in work practices and depression during the pandemic. Given this study's limitations, it is hoped that the influence of region and occupation on depression will be examined by recruiting a wide range of participants in the future. ABSTRACT

PurposeMany workers with disabilities face cultures of exclusion in the workplace, which can affect their participation in decisions, workplace engagement, job attitudes and performance. The authors explore a key indicator of engagement—perceptions of organizational citizenship behavior (OCB)—as it relates to disability and other marginalized identities in the workplace.Design/methodology/approachUsing an online survey, legal professionals answered questions about their workplace experiences. Ordinary least squares (OLS) multivariate regression analysis with progressive adjustment was used to investigate the effect of demographic and organizational factors on perceptions of OCB.FindingsThe authors find that employees with disabilities have lower perceptions of OCB, both before and after controlling for other personal and job variables. The disability gap is cut nearly in half, however, when controlling for workplace culture measures of co-worker support and the presence of an effective diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI) policy. Disability does not appear to interact with gender, race/ethnicity and LGBTQ + status in affecting perceptions of OCB.Originality/valueThe results point to the workplace barriers faced by people with disabilities that affect their perceptions of engagement, and the potential for supportive cultures to change these perceptions.

ABSTRACT

Despite the severe social, health, political and economic impacts of the outbreak of Covid-19 on Palestinians, we contend that one positive aspect of this pandemic is that it has revealed the perils and shortcomings of the teacher-centered, traditional education which colonizes students' minds, compromises their analytical abilities and, paradoxically, places them in a system of oppression which audits their ideas, limits their freedoms, and curtails their creativity. While Israeli occupation has proven to be an obstacle in the face of the Palestinian government's attempt to combat and contain the Corona crisis, on-line education, the sole arena that escapes this colonial system, has forced many instructors to give up their domination over the process of education and to create a more collaborative atmosphere of education that is based on dialogue, research and flexibility of the curriculum content. This study is designed to gauge English literature students' responses to this mode of digital learning. We interviewed a hundred students from six English literature programs between March and August, 2020. Thus, through critically examining students' answers, and by drawing on Freire's concepts of banking education, consciousness and dialogue, we propose that online education is an important step towards the decolonization of education and a call for a paradigm shift on the account that the existing paradigm of traditional education is stifling students' creativity and critical thinking.

ABSTRACT

Purpose: This study aims to assess e-working remotely from the perspective of online workers based on important theoretical aspects that have been found to have an impact in this regard. Specifically, the study examines the influence that work-life balance, job effectiveness, organizational trust and flexibility have on e-workers experience in terms of satisfaction. Design/methodology/approach: For this research, the E-Work Life (EWL) scale, which consists of 17 questions and yields four critical dimensions, namely work-life balance, job effectiveness, organizational trust and flexibility, was adapted to measure remote e-working experience. Data were collected by sending the electronic questionnaire link to e-workers. In order to define the factorial structure and test whether the data fit the hypothesized measurement model, factor analysis was initially conducted on a sample of 230 e-workers. The relationship between EWL scale variables and e-worker experience was examined using order logit model. Findings: This paper initially provides the validity and reliability of the EWL scale. Exploratory factor analysis optimally supported three factors and 13 items in contrast to the original scale. The influence that the remaining structure comprised of work-life balance, job effectiveness and flexibility has on e-worker experience was also measured. Results indicate that work-life balance and job effectiveness have a positive influence on e-workers satisfaction with online working, while flexibility does not show a positive association in this regard. Of the three variables, job effectiveness shows to be the most influential factor for e-worker satisfaction. Research limitations/implications: For the nature of this study, a larger sample size would have been more preferable. It must also be noted that the study took place in circumstances of the COVID-19 pandemic where social activities were limited, and this could have interfered with employees' emotions to some level and ultimately with their evaluation of e-work. It is suggested that further research be conducted. Practical implications: Owing to the increasing occurrence of these working practices worldwide, particularly with the COVID-19 situation, this study, through its' findings, contributes to a broader knowledge on successful implementation of e-work environments. It helps individuals to comprehend crucial e-work-related issues and supports organizations to identify areas for improvement, so that effective strategies can be developed to increase productivity while supporting worker's well-being and satisfaction at the same time. Originality/value: This paper addresses a previously identified need for further validation of the newly developed EWL scale in a different setting and with a new sample. At the same time, it adds to the understanding of the impact of important dimensions previously shown to affect e-worker satisfaction with online working. ABSTRACT

This article provides the first systematic assessment of the impact of COVID-19 on the labor market for immigrant workers in Europe. The authors estimate that in 2020 extra-EU migrants were twice as likely and EU migrants were 1.6 times as likely to experience employment loss relative to comparable natives. To understand the determinants of these large gaps, the article focuses on three job characteristics—essentiality, temporariness, and teleworkability—and documents that migrants were overrepresented among essential, temporary, and low-teleworkable occupations at the onset of the pandemic. The authors estimate that pre-pandemic occupational sorting accounts for 25 to 35% of the explained migrant–native gap in the risk of employment termination, while sorting into industries accounts for the rest of the explained gap. More than half of this gap remains unexplained. Although major employment losses were averted thanks to the massive use of short-time work programs in Europe, migrant workers—particularly extra-EU migrants—suffered from high economic vulnerability during the pandemic. © The Author(s) 2023.

ABSTRACT

This chapter explores individual careers that involve living and working in different countries. Such international careers are increasingly common among global professionals. The management of global careerists is a challenge for organizations and global mobility (GM) departments due to the many micro- and mesoelements that have an influence on the outcomes of working abroad. Career counselors would benefit from understanding the key determinants of working in GM in order to refine suggested career interventions. Therefore, the chapter discusses organizational considerations, the roles of GM professionals, and their particular challenges. Moreover, it proposes a framework for GM work and presents reflections on the impact of COVID-19 on GM, delineating recent substantial changes to global careers and their impact on those who manage GM. ABSTRACT

Objective: To investigate the knowledge,attitude, and practice(KAP)related to COVID-19 and the satisfaction with the prevention and control of COVID-19 in urban and Rural Residents in Zunyi City, and provide a reference for the health education and prevention and control of COVID-19. Methods: Through online and offline questionnaires, the stratified multistage sampling method was used to investigate the KAP and satisfaction of urban and rural residents in Zunyi City for the prevention and control of the COVID-19epidemic, and to analyze the differences and influencing factors of KAP among residents with different characteristics. Results: A total of 603 valid questionnaires were collected. The total awareness rate of COVID-19 among residents was 79.43%. There was a significant difference in the awareness of COVID-19 among different ages, educational levels, and occupations(P < 0.05). The proportion of residents with a positive attitude towards COVID-19 was 87.23%, while there was no significant difference in the attitude of residents with different characteristics(P > 0.05). Moreover,93.37% of them had good behavior in preventing the COVID-19 virus, while the differences among residents with different education and occupation were statistically significant(P < 0.05). The result of multivariate analysis showed that residents with low education levels had lower cognition of COVID-19 than those with high education levels OR = 0.647(95%CI 0.548,0.764). The residents with high cognition took better protective behavior than those with low cognition OR = 0.531(95%CI 0.328,0.860). Conclusion: Urban and rural residents have a high degree of satisfaction,a good KAP, and a high level of enthusiasm for COVID-19prevention and control. However,it is necessary to strengthen the publicity and education of COVID-19 in vulnerable groups(such as low education levels and older/younger) to better promote the precise prevention and control of COVID-19.

ABSTRACT

The COVID-19 pandemic has had a profound impact on the world economy. The need for social distancing, lockdowns, or complete curfews has meant that this impact varied significantly across segments of society. Those unable to work remotely, or who work in settings necessitating close contact with others faced a trade-off between their lives and livelihoods. This trade-off was especially pronounced early on during the pandemic when vaccines had not yet been developed, hospitals were overwhelmed and governments were resorting to strict social distancing measures to mitigate the impact on their already strained healthcare systems. In this study, I examine the extent to which jobs can be successfully performed remotely in five MENA countries: Algeria, Egypt, Jordan, Palestine and Tunisia. I develop a teleworkability index using micro data on occupational characteristics. I find that relatively few jobs in MENA countries are compatible with teleworking and this share varies considerably by industry, gender, age and the formality of employment. I further investigate the ability to work from home in practice by considering the digital divide (a lack of reliable access to vital tools for teleworking, such as a personal computer and reliable internet access) as well as actual work from home behavior during the pandemic using real time surveys. I find that even for those who have high telework potential only few have access to computer and internet. Surveys conducted during the pandemic suggest that our measure of teleworkability was quite close to actual work from home behavior in each country.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVE: To determine the frequency and risk factors of musculoskeletal disorders in high-risk occupation workers in an urban setting. METHODS: The analytical cross-sectional study was conducted in Karachi from July to December 2020, and comprised office workers, operation theatre technicians and coolies. The presence of musculoskeletal disorders was assessed using the Nordic Musculoskeletal Questionnaire to determine factors associated with moderate to severe condition. Data was analysed using SPSS 20. RESULTS: Of the 300 male subjects, 100(33.3%) each were office workers, operation theatre technicians and coolies. The overall mean age was 33.25±6.8 years (range: 18-50 years). The overall prevalence of musculoskeletal disorders was 179(59.7%). Besides, 117(65.4%) patients with musculoskeletal disorders had intermediate stage of the disease. The lower back and neck were the most common site of trouble involved in preceding 12 months 111(43.6%) each. CONCLUSIONS: Prevalence of musculoskeletal disorders was found to be a common problem affecting high-risk occupational workers.

ABSTRACT

This study investigated changes in nurses' sense of calling during the COVID-19 pandemic, as well as possible reasons for these changes. A total of 440 nurses in Turkey responded to a single open-ended question about their work attitudes and experiences. Emergent Qualitative Document Analysis (QDA) was used to analyze the responses. Results demonstrated that nurses experienced both positive and negative changes to their sense of calling, sometimes simultaneously. The most frequently cited reasons for positive changes were nurses' perceived job significance, their desire to serve humanity, and a sense of meaningful work. In contrast, terms describing their reasons for experiencing negative changes include exhaustion, underpaid, unappreciated, overwork, disengagement, risky, stress, and anxiety. This study provides the first evidence on how a sense of calling experienced by Turkish nurses has been affected by the COVID-19 pandemic. Implications for theory, research, and practice are explored. ABSTRACT

Introduction: The use of telehealth has accelerated with health service delivery restrictions experienced during the COVID-19 pandemic. This research assessed learner enrolments and feedback in an introductory, online, open-access, rural-focused telehealth training course to inform future telehealth education design.Methods: Differences in enrolled learner demographics "before" (n = 331) and "after" (n = 3,776) COVID-19-related changes in Australia were assessed. Content analysis of learner feedback was conducted to understand the beneficial aspects of the course and to inform future telehealth education and training development.Results: Concurrent with telehealth changes announced in Australia in March 2020, enrolments in the course sharply increased. While students comprised most enrolments, initial growth was strongest amongst health educators and health professionals. More learners enrolled from major city areas and other countries. User feedback indicated the flexible delivery mode, policy, links to resources and multimedia content were the most beneficial aspects of the course. Learners would like more client perspectives as well as discipline-and context-specific information. There is also an appetite for more practice -based telehealth education.Conclusions: Growth in demand for the course and positive learner feedback showed it was filling an important introductory training gap. Learner feedback also highlighted several perceived barriers among learners in being able to implement best-practice telehealth in their current or future practice. This feedback could be used to inform the design of further telehealth training for health professionals and students to, ultimately, enhance the use of telehealth technologies.

ABSTRACT

This study aims to reveal the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on the necessity of using English as an international language. For this purpose, this study conducted a web survey of Japanese workers, and statistically examined the extent to which the use of English increased or decreased after the outbreak. The findings are as follows. First, although some types of use decreased or increased, the majority did not show substantial changes. Second, the changes in English use were largely influenced by worker factors, such as types of occupation and employment (e.g. it declined typically among sales workers but not among the self-employed and freelancers), the degree of remote working (e.g. not being allowed to work remotely reduced it), and industry (e.g. it declined among workers in accommodation and real estate sectors but increased among public servants). These findings suggest the following implications: (1) non-decline in English use would suggest its resilience as an international language, the necessity of which could endure even in such a global upheaval;and (2) the frequency of using English (and other modes of international communication) is relatively independent of reduced human mobility, but it is largely affected by the economic climate.

ABSTRACT

Introduction: Vitamin D deficiency (VDD) is common in young adults even in sunlight sufficient countries. It manifests with subtle and trivial symptoms that are often ignored. Nutritional deficiency due to improper dietary habits, poverty, long hours at work and study are factors. The lockdown during COVID has exacerbated the incidence. We had a patient with VDD who became symptomatic after routine thyroidectomy prompting our review into literature on the global health perspective of VDD. Material and method: - A 21-year-old nursing student developed hypocalcaemia within 24 hours after a routine thyroidectomy. VDD was detected and patient improved after supplementation. Literature was reviewed from Pubmed database for the medical aspects of the problem, from Government archives like the Scientific Advisory Committee on Nutrition, ICMR etc for cause and medical archives including those of paediatric and general health for the impact of disease at the state, national and global level. A global health problem list was prepared and data was reviewed. Discussion: Vitamin D is protective against respiratory infections due to viral aetiology including COVID. However, complete lockdown to prevent spread of COVID, online learning, and work from home culture has reduced sunlight exposure and increased incidence of VDD. Post thyroidectomy hypocalcaemia is common in VDD. Conclusion: Since there is a high prevalence of asymptomatic VDD even in sunshine sufficient countries, it is recommended to screen all patients especially young adults for VDD during routine preoperative work up.

ABSTRACT

This study examined three influential factors of junior college students' learning engagement: (a) intrinsic and extrinsic motivation, (b) career decision-making self-efficacy (CDMSE), and (c) self-regulation. Participants included 206 students enrolled in the secretarial administration program in a junior college in South Korea. The primary research findings are as follows. First, intrinsic and extrinsic motivation positively influenced CDMSE. Intrinsic motivation influenced learning engagement through CDMSE and self-regulation;extrinsic motivation did not. Second, CDMSE influenced self-regulation and indirectly influenced learning engagement through self-regulation. Third, self-regulation had the largest effect on learning engagement. The findings highlight the need to examine and enhance students' self-regulation skills and help improve the learning engagement of junior college students. This study confirmed the significance of motivation, CDMSE, and self-regulation for junior college students' learning engagement.

ABSTRACT

PurposeThe world of work is changing and creating challenges and opportunities for the employment inclusion of young people with disabilities. In this article, the perceptions held by young adults with disabilities regarding participation in the future of work are examined.Design/methodology/approachOne-on-one interviews were conducted with Canadian young adults (ages 18–36 years) living with a disability. Participants were asked about their thoughts regarding the impact of the changing nature of work on their labor market involvement and career aspirations. A thematic analysis was performed to identify and examine emergent salient themes.FindingsIn total, 22 young adults were interviewed;over half held secure employment. Career aspirations and work-related decisions were primarily shaped by a participant's health needs. The future of work was seen as a more proximal determinant to employment. Digital technologies were expected to impact working conditions and create barriers and facilitators to employment. Participants who indicated being securely employed held positive expectations regarding the impact of digital technology on their work. Participants working precariously held negative appraisals regarding the impact of digital technologies on employment opportunities. The role of technological and soft skills was critical to participating in a labor market reliant on advanced technology. Participants reported barriers to developing job skills related to their disability and their work arrangements.Originality/valueThis research highlights the importance of considering changes in the future of work, especially the digital transformation of the economy, in the design of initiatives which promote the employment inclusion of young adults with disabilities. Despite the significance of the changing nature of work, supporting health needs and encouraging access to secure work arrangements also remain paramount.

ABSTRACT

This study examined the impact of COVID-19 on the working style of fathers raising young children and its influence on their family and working life. Fathers with full-time jobs (N = 606) participated in this study in August 2020. The results indicated the following conclusions, (a) Only fathers in certain conditions (desk work, college graduate, high income, etc.) increased the number of days working from home, (b) The fathers who worked from home because of COVID-19 reported "doing family" (active, responsive, and generative involvement in the family) more than others, (c) The fathers who worked from home and had working spouses negotiated more with their spouses and work colleagues, (d) Changes in working style increased "doing family," and improved satisfaction with family and work, and the satisfaction with their lives. ABSTRACT

In the last two years, a growing number of studies have focused on the promotion of students' mental health to address the negative effects of the COVID-19 pandemic. However, less studies have been conducted on sustaining teachers' mental health which has been affected by the sudden changes in online teaching and the difficulties in keeping and building relationship with students. Even before the pandemic, teaching has long been recognised as one of the most challenging occupations characterized by high levels of stress. Although the research highlighted the key role of mental health promotion among teachers, there is still a lack of programs enhancing teachers' wellbeing. This study examined the impact of the PROMEHS program, a school-based curriculum, on teachers' mental health. A total of 687 teachers participated in the study. Applying a preand post-training study design with experimental and waiting list groups, teachers were evaluated in social and emotional learning, resilience, and self-efficacy. The results showed that there was a significant improvement in all competences of the teachers in the experimental group compared to those in the waiting list group. The paper discusses the implications of the findings with recommendations for further studies in the area.

ABSTRACT

Human service professional practitioners (HSPPs) who work in Title I schools help students overcome challenges including absenteeism and behavioral problems and serve as liaisons between the school, family, and student. The pivot to online education during the COVID-19 school shutdowns meant that HSPP services also pivoted. The purpose of this generic qualitative study was to understand how HSPPs perceived their ability to serve Title I students during the pandemic through the lens of Bandura's self-efficacy theory. Semistructured interviews were conducted with 15 HSPPs who delivered services to Title I students before and during the pandemic. Participants reported their service delivery was effective prior to the pandemic despite a lack of resources. Themes from coding analysis included (a) an ability to effectively deliver services before the COVID-19 pandemic despite a lack of resources;(b) not feeling that their job was undoable;(c) significant disruptions in pandemic service delivery (increasing student needs, changes in job responsibilities, communication/trust issues);(d) there was no way to be prepared;and (e) they gained helpful insights into professional priorities, the use of new organizational tools, and new resources for disruptions. Results could be used by HSPPs, education administrators, and stakeholders in the development of comprehensive virtual plans in schools, which could help parents, HSPPs, and school administrators pivot more smoothly and mitigate potential issues during these types of events. BACKGROUND: Recognizing the disproportionate rates of COVID-19 infection and death experienced by Filipinxs in the USA, this study examines whether data disaggregation reveals meaningful differences between Filipinxs, non-Asians, and other groups often aggregated into the problematic "Asian and Pacific Islander" category across a series of social and health variables associated with COVID-19 risk. METHODS: Using data from the California Health Interview Survey (CHIS, 2017-18; N = 42,330) and the National Survey on Drug Use and Health (NSDUH, 2018-19; N = 135,516), we ran chi-squared tests yielding Wald F-values to compare Filipinxs with other "Asians and Pacific islanders" and non-Asians across 10 social and 4 health-related variables. Health conditions included asthma, diabetes, heart conditions, and high blood pressure. RESULTS: Filipinxs were much more likely to report diabetes (CHIS: 12.6%; NSDUH: 14.4%) than other Asian/PI respondents (8.4%; 8.0%) or non-Asians (10.8%; 10.1%), as well as asthma and high blood pressure. Filipinxs were also disproportionately employed in the healthcare and service occupations (CHIS: 36.7%) in comparison to other Asian/PI respondents (19.0%) and non-Asians (22.4%). DISCUSSION: Across several variables, Filipinxs have less in common with other Asians and Pacific Islanders than with non-Asians. Combining these groups can obscure patterns that affect health and the risks of contracting or dying from COVID-19.
